To achieve a super smooth stained finish, particularly over open grain timber, use the Feast Watson Sanding Sealer first, then sand with a 240-grit paper, remove dust, and wipe down with methylated spirits and clean cloth.

A propane torch can be used to remove bubbles from the freshly coated surface. Sweep the area with the propane torch from 15 cm above the surface until bubbles disappear.
The carbon dioxide breaks the bubbles, so the propane torch will work nicely. The bubbles will not be broken by heat.

Feast Watson Prooftint is a spirit-based dye stain, which will be absorbed far more rapidly into a dry, bare interior timber surface. Because it is a spirit-based stain, it will tend to set and cure much faster than other timber stains on application.

It is best to allow your freshly rinsed clean timber deck to dry thoroughly before applying your protective timber finish coats. When applying a water-based exterior timber oil or stain, you can have a small amount of damp timber, which can assist the water-based coatings in penetrating the timber a touch deeper.

When it comes to choosing the colour for your deck, it is all about personal preference! We recommend completing a patch test on your timber offcuts to ensure the colour you desire can be achieved. Why not take your off cuts to your local Bunnings? They will be able to assist you in finding the right colour.

Tannin staining can occur with any timber. Most tannins are water-extractive.
If the dry oil, stain, or paint film is intact and discolouration occurs, then staining is caused by water within the surface. The moisture will migrate and eventually carry the tannin from within the wood to the surface of the paint film, and then the resulting dark stains appear.
To rectify - Pressure wash down using a fan pattern setting on the garden hose nozzle or specific pressure cleaning unit. Then while the surface is still wet, apply the Feast Watson Woodclean dilution as per label instructions.
Feast Watson Woodclean is a powerful oxalic acid that will reduce the coated surface water resistance and clean out any unseen contaminants. This wash/scrub down process may need to be repeated if the leaching stain is quite stubborn and may also need a light 80-120 grit sanding back to open the surface up a touch more before repeating the washing process.
Once rinsed clean and dry - Apply one final coat of your preferred Feast Watson exterior timber protective finish.

Early weathering of any product can be a sign of inadequate film builds. Other reasons could be the specific timber surface porosity, activity over the finished coating, and how much direct UV impacts the layer.
To rectify, wash/scrub down the faded gloss Wet Look coating via the Feast Watson Woodclean as per label instructions. Once thoroughly rinsed clean and dry - Apply one to two refresher coats of the well-stirred Feast Waston Wet Look Decking Oil, being sure to keep stirring the solution during the application to sustain a fully blended Wet Look formulation over the expanse, for continuity of the dry coated gloss finish.
Regular cleaning maintenance of your deck coating will ensure the finished coating is sustained for many years between coat refreshments.

Lap mark usually occurs because of failing to maintain an all-important applicator ‘wet edge’ when applying the paint, oil, or stain.
It’s also a sign that the person has applied the coating over a broader surface area too far ahead of the last pass, which starts drying and sticking to the applicator pad or brush, leaving behind unsightly marks
Lap marks may also result during application in hot weather; avoid applying in hot conditions. When coating large areas, work in sections, along a plank of wood at a time, rather than across planks. Apply long strokes and use natural breaks in the boards as stopping points.

Back-brushing (or rolling) is the process of working the paint into a rough surface after it has been applied via spray application. Back-brushing must be done while the paint is still wet. Using a brush or roller, work the paint into any textured areas of the sprayed coating.

It's all about the look you desire. When it comes to your deck, you have two options: an oil or a stain. A decking oil will enhance the natural beauty of the timber, while a decking stain will completely change the colour of the timber while still showcasing the timber grain. If you're working with pine timber, a stain is recommended to transform the colour of the timber as an oil may appear orange when coated onto pine. But of course, it's completely up to you and your personal preference!

Due to the product's viscosity, it may be too thin to spray; as such, we do not recommend it. If you are completing a larger area project, we recommend diluting Feast Watson Prooftint with Feast Watson Prooftint Colour Reducer to evenly distribute the stain and give you more ‘working time’; this will help provide an even finish. You can apply with a brush or our Feast Watson Floor Finish Applicator. A clean rag/cloth will do the trick if it is a smaller area.

Most colours will appear to slightly deepen or increase in vibrancy due to the reflective qualities of a clear coat over them. It is more apparent over dark or rich vibrant colours that are overcoated with a semi-gloss or gloss clear coat finish.

Different batches might have a slight colour difference. So, if you are completing a project with multiple cans, it is best to mix them to create a uniform colour.

If you are trying to match a specific colour, it is worth completing some test patches or test pieces on off-cuts to ensure the finished colour is what you are after. Try taking your off cuts to your local Bunnings, as they'll be able to assist you in finding the matching colour.

A coating may weather quickly due to the following:
1. Insufficient preparation: the decking timber was not prepared and washed down according to instructions.
2. Insufficient coating: not enough product was used according to recommended via the product label instructions.
3. Product not stirred/mixed thoroughly before and during application: It is important to ensure that the product is well blended to achieve a protective, durable finish.
4. Other reasons for early weathering of any product can be a sign of inadequate film builds, the specific timber surface porosity, activity over the finished coating, and how much direct UV impacts the layer.

There are several reasons for a fresh deck coating being tacky/sticky. Some of the more common reasons are:
1. The porosity and oil content of the timber can significantly affect drying times.
2. Humidity, surface, and air temperature on application.
3. Not stirring the product thoroughly enough to achieve a complete formulation.
4. Insufficient/incorrect deck wash-down process.
5. Heavy flood coated application over the area.
6. Deck board cupping in sections that causes pooling of the coat.
Other reasons include:
1. It may be a naturally oily timber species if it is a new bare timber.
2. Over-application, where the oil is not penetrating the surface and the timber is at its limit of accepting more coating.
3. You have used a penetrating oil over a non-compatible product like a decking stain, varnish, or paint.
4. You have applied a new coating on the deck without surface preparation – For example, using a decking oil directly over a flaking, greasy, dusty, mould or algae-covered deck.
5. If you have used products that require wiping off excess such as Feast Watson Traditional Timber Oil. The substrate may remain tacky if the excess is not wiped off properly.
6. Insufficient surface preparation: If the timber surface was not appropriately prepared before coating, then things such as the timbers’ natural oils, residual preservative treatment on the surface of the timber, or grime and grease left on the timber surface from the construction process will cause a coating to take much longer to dry or may also cause some adhesion issues fully.

We would not recommend using cling wrap as it is not strong enough and will bulge when the product is poured. Painter’s tape is the way to go!
